The recruitment process in the United Nations System varies depending on the vacancy you are applying for. The recruitment process usually consists of the following stages:
1. Creating a profile and application form for a specific vacancy
Select one of the United Nations vacancies listed on the official website or the Inspira System. A typical job application form is presented as the Personal History Profile (PHP) which includes information about your education, present and past work experience, skills and a cover letter (CV) to be prepared online. Depending on the job you are applying to you may get a set of multiple choice questions and asked to give information about your level of proficiency for each skill listed.
You will be invited to take part in the next recruitment stage if your application is considered successful.
2. Assessment exercise
Depending on the job vacancy, you might be asked to undergo the assessment exercise. Assessment test includes a written test on different subjects, that are required for the job position. Another type of assessment could be case study, that evaluates individual or team work.
Successful candidates are invited to the next recruitment stage.
3. Competency-based interview
Short-listed candidates are interviewed directly by the representatives of the various United Nations departments. The interviews can be telephonic, video or in-person. The competency-based interview is intended to test your competencies and behavioural patterns at work. To prepare for the competency-based interview, look through the preparation materials and take a mock interview with a qualified professional on this page.
During both stages – assessment and interview United Nations members learn more about your academic qualifications, motivation/statement of interest, language skills and level of professional experience, that are directly related to the successful performance on the job.
4. Job offer
If you successfully pass all recruitment stages, you will receive a job offer to join the United Nations.
