The United Nations workforce is made up of different categories of employees. Most of these categories also has different levels, which reflect increasing levels of responsibilities and requirements as employees progress through merit and qualifications.
The information in this section will help you decide which personnel category, and what level, you fit into. This will be useful when you start searching and applying for jobs.
Broadly speaking, there are four distinct employees categories in the UN system as a whole:
- Staff Members
The United Nations staff members are the primary workforce of the Organisation having a special calling to serve our universal ideals of peace, respect for fundamental rights, and international cooperation.
- Consultants/Individual Contractors
Consultants and Individual contractors are experts in a professional field with specific skills and knowledge engaged to support United Nations programmes and projects.
The United Nations Volunteers programme is a UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.
The United Nations Internship Programme is the easiest way for young professionals to start a career in the UN System.
